INTO Conference 2015

The International National Trusts Organisation (INTO), with which Europa Nostra has developed a mutually beneficial partnership since 2009, will hold its biennial conference in Cambridge, UK, from 7-11 September 2015. The conference, comprising plenary sessions and practical workshops, will explore the question ‘What is the role and purpose of the National Trust movement in the 21st century?’

The 16th International Conference of National Trusts is hosted by the National Trust of England, Wales & Northern Ireland, and organised in collaboration with the University of Cambridge.

Europa Nostra’s Executive President Denis de Kergorlay and Secretary General Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović will participate in the first plenary session entitled ‘From Europa Nostra to Terra Nostra: Global Heritage Movement without Borders’ on the morning of 7 September at the West Road Concert Hall. The afternoon session will focus on the role of the National Trust movement in 21st century. Since the establishment of the first ‘National Trust’ in 1895, the movement has grown to include a range of countries and INTO now has over 60 members from Australia to Zimbabwe! Each is different, but each faces similar challenges and opportunities: increased pressure on land and landscapes, economic volatility and remaining relevant in an ever changing society.

The Activity Days will take place from 8-10 September at different locations near to Cambridge. The practical workshops will cover various issues: ‘Cultural Identities’ (Day 1, at Anglesey Abbey, Wicken Fen and Wimpole Estate), ‘Growing the Movement’ (Day 2, at Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds and Ickworth), and ‘Land, Landscape and Nature’ (Day 3, at Anglesey Abbey, Wicken Fen and Wimpole Estate).

The last day of the conference will return to the West Road Concert Hall with a final plenary session focusing on the outcomes from the week as well as on the announcement of new initiatives and direction for INTO over the next few years.
